Shoppers continue to think that the self-checkout lane means they can help themselves to stuff without paying for it.
Deputies responded to Walmart at 3:30 pm for a shoplifting report and discovered a man had gone through the self-checkout and skipped scanning his energy drinks and other items.
He then left the South Point Walmart with the merchandise. After viewing a video of the incident, officers issued him a summons to appear in Lawrence County Municipal Court.
Officers returned to Walmart later in the day to retrieve a bag of pot that an employee found in the parking lot. Police booked the drugs into evidence.
They were back 40 minutes later after loss prevention said they spotted a man and woman go through the self-checkout and play a game in which they picked up items two at a time and only scanned one of them. Among the items she didn’t pay for were cat food and diapers.
Deputies also discovered several thongs and other merchandise in the woman’s purse. Police arrested the woman for theft and an open warrant. They did not charge her companion.
Another shifty shopper helped herself to some freon in the automotive aisle, shoved it in her purse, then headed to customer service to attempt to return it without a receipt. The store issued her a gift card, but called in the police to investigate after viewing video that showed her taking the item.
