Wanted Man Too Sick For Jail
Just before 11 am, officers spotted a man wanted as a suspect for a current investigation near 12th and Offnere. However, the man refused to pull his bicycle over for the police.
Officers caught up with the guy, who’s been arrested 21 previous times, in the 1600 block of Robinson and took him into custody.
However, due to an abscess on his leg, they contacted Portsmouth Fire Department medics to check him out.
Even though there were open warrants from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office and Boyd County Sheriff’s Office, police decided the man was too sick to arrest, and medics transported him to SOMC for treatment. Officers said they would file charges when he had recovered.
About 90 minutes later, police faced a similar situation when they tried to take Gary Shaw, 61, into custody on a warrant for failure to appear. He claimed he required medical treatment, so EMS personnel transported him to the hospital.
Shaw was released later in the day and booked into the Scioto County Jail.
