Deputies arrested a 73-year-old man on parole for a gun crime for murdering 40-year-old West Portsmouth resident Shurvonn Byrd.
Just before noon on Thursday, Byrd’s mother called 9-1-1 and said she’d found her deceased daughter covered in blood on the floor of Danny Vanhoose’s home. Vanhoose was a long-time friend of Byrd’s mother.

When deputies and detectives arrived on the scene, they found Vanhoose inside the home and took him into custody without incident.
Officers contacted the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to assist them at the crime scene and interviewed witnesses.
The coroner transported Ms. Byrd’s body to Montgomery County for further forensic investigation.
Vanhoose was paroled in August of 2022 for a sentence for attempting to discharge a firearm at a home or school. He also has previous arrests for contempt and multiple DUI charges.
Officers charged Vanhoose with aggravated murder, and he’s being held without bond.
