William “Larry” Lawrence Armbrister, a beloved father, brother and friend, passed away on November 28, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on November 20, 1947, in Portsmouth, Ohio to the late George and Ruby “Pat” (Nee Staggs) Armbrister. Bill spent his life dedicated to his family, community, and his career in the railroad industry.
A PHS graduate, class of 1965, Larry attended Ohio State University until being hired on at the Railroad. He diligently worked as a conductor and brakeman for Norfolk and Western, later known as Norfolk Southern. Larry was a proud member of the American Legion James Dickey Post #23, where he dedicated many years to encouraging donations and supporting veterans. His friends and family often remarked on his generosity and unyielding commitment to the community.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Larry enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including solving crossword puzzles and flea marketing. He cherished spending time at the legion, especially on hamburger nights, where he shared laughter and camaraderie with lifelong friends “None of whom were from Michigan”. A notable moment in his life occurred when he made it through all of the questions and qualified to go on the television show “Jeopardy!” – even though he did not, it was a testament to his intelligence and desire to challenge himself, which he completed “just to show he could do it.”
Larry is survived by his son, Andrew (Robin Ross) Armbrister of Portsmouth, daughter, Carrie Mae Hazlin of Columbus, Oh, sister Mary Ann Flood of Rochester, NY, Grandchildren: Bryce Andrew Armbrister, Andrew Hunter Armbrister, Aidden Clay Armbrister, Kayla Arauco, Isabel Arauco. Larry was also a devoted sports fan, who enjoyed watching baseball or football, passionately cheering for his favorite teams.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Legion James Dickey Post #23, an organization that was close to Bill’s heart, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others.
William Lawrence Armbrister will be deeply missed, but his legacy of kindness, friendship, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
