A disabled woman died in a house fire after a man said he dosed off with a lit cigarette.
Thirty-two-year-old Adriene Goodwin, who suffered from chronic health issues and was on oxygen, died in an early morning house fire in Proctorville.
Her father, who lived in the residence with Goodwin, told officers he woke up to a fire alarm and found the house on fire. He told deputies he must have dosed off with a lit cigarette. He believed the cigarette caught a blanket on fire and spread to the oxygen line.
Due to his own health conditions, he was not strong enough to get the woman out of the house. The Lawrence County Coroner determined the cause of death was smoke inhalation.
The fire marshal is investigating the fire, but at this time, no foul play is suspected.
