A passerby’s quick action may have prevented tragedy after a toddler was found wandering near a roadway while the adult responsible for watching him had reportedly fallen asleep.
Deputies were dispatched after concerned motorists spotted a young child wearing only a diaper near the road.
According to the report, witnesses stopped to check on the child’s safety and went to a nearby residence looking for an adult. When they looked inside, they reported seeing a young man asleep on the couch.
When deputies arrived, the witnesses explained they had become alarmed after seeing the child near traffic with no adult supervision in sight.
Investigators made contact with the caregiver, a 19-year-old family member who was watching the child while other relatives were away.
According to the report, the caregiver told deputies he had been awake since the previous evening and “must have dozed off” while sitting on the couch.
The incident occurred in the Pedro area.
The caregiver explained that the child, who is approximately three years old, had managed to get outside despite a chain lock being installed near the top of the door.
According to the report, family members said the child had previously figured out how to disable the lock using a broom.
Deputies observed a broom lying near the couch inside the residence.
While speaking with the family, deputies noted that the child appeared well-fed and otherwise healthy, but was dirty and wearing a heavily soiled diaper.
Investigators also described the home as being in disarray, with trash and clutter scattered throughout the residence.
Photographs were taken for documentation.
Deputies asked one of the witnesses to provide a written statement detailing what he observed before law enforcement arrived.
The child’s guardian was contacted and returned home shortly afterward. Deputies advised her of the situation before clearing the scene.
Why Cases Like This Raise Concerns
Child safety experts say it takes only a few moments for a young child to wander into a dangerous situation.
Roadways, ponds, swimming pools, construction areas, animals, and extreme weather conditions can all pose serious risks when children are unsupervised.
Law enforcement agencies frequently encourage parents and caregivers to use multiple layers of protection, especially with toddlers who have learned how to open doors, defeat locks, or leave the home without assistance.
In this case, witnesses acted quickly after spotting the child near the roadway, helping ensure the youngster was safely returned home before anyone was injured.
