A desperate homeless woman looking for help found there really wasn’t any available despite the best efforts of Portsmouth Police.
At 1:30 pm, a caller a woman who dispatch said was moaning and yelling contacted 9-1-1 to report she heard gunshots at the 9th Street homeless camp. When officers arrived on the scene, she told them she had recently had spinal surgery.
At 4 p.m., a 9th Street resident asked officers to check the area for homeless campers. Police spoke to the woman they’d dealt with earlier in the day. She said she could not walk due to having surgery and was trying to find a ride somewhere before it started raining.
Residents on Waller Street contacted PPD to complain that individuals from a homeless camp near the railroad tracks were using drugs and wandering into the neighborhood. They asked officers to set up extra patrols.
Just before 4:30 am, police headed to a report of someone passed out at the gas pumps at Speedway. Police said the man was homeless and living in his car.
