It’s a great time of the year to spot a bald eagle in the wild. This is the time of year when eagles start looking for love and building nests. The majestic birds are easier to spot these days since Ohio has close to 1,000 nesting pairs. (That’s up from just 4 in 1979.)

Bare trees mean it’s easier to see our national bird out and about. They prefer large trees like oaks and cottonwoods and prefer to nest along waterways where they can catch fish in warmer weather.
In our area, they love to nest near major rivers, so watch along the Scioto and Ohio Rivers. If you feel like traveling, there are several great locations near Lake Erie, like the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area.

Remember, bald eagles are protected under state and federal laws. So, while it’s okay to look, please stay at least 100 yards away and do not disturb their nest.
If you spot an active nest site, go to wildohio.gov to report it. This information helps the Division of Wildlife biologists estimate eagle population dynamics and monitor trends, ensuring this and other species continue to do well in the Buckeye State.
