Scioto County Commissioners approved a letter of support to be sent on their behalf to the US Department of Energy on behalf of ACO and the HALEU project at the Piketon nuclear facility.
“They have approximately 130 people working there,” said Commissioner Bryan Davis. “A lot of them are from Scioto County. Ninety percent of them are from the four-county region that includes Scioto, Ross, Pike, and Jackson.”
He said the facility is applying for more DOE funds for HALEU production. “It’s very important for the future of nuclear development in the United States. They are looking to really beef that up and go for commercial implementation.”
The commissioner voted unanimously to approve the letter.
HALEU is the acronym for High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium.
According to the US Department of Energy, “There’s a pressing need for HALEU now that could force some companies to reevaluate their plans if they can’t access this fuel.”
The DOE has contracted with Centrus to supply 16 advanced centrifuges for the enrichment plant in Piketon, Ohio.
