What began as a frightening report of an aggressive woman with a gun quickly unraveled into a chaotic domestic dispute that ended with both parties in jail—and their dogs hauled off for safekeeping.
Officers were called to Furnace Creek after a man reported a woman was acting aggressively and had a firearm. He told dispatch he was leaving the property to get away from her. Officers were already familiar with the pair, having dealt with prior disputes between them.
Minutes later, the situation took another turn.
The woman called police and denied having a gun, telling officers she was sitting in her car in the driveway and claimed the man was preventing her from leaving.
Then came a third version.
The man called back again, now saying there was no gun at all, but that the woman was threatening to harm herself with scissors.
Officers Step In
When officers arrived, they detained both individuals to get control of the situation and sort out the conflicting claims. Because neither party was able to properly care for the animals during the arrest, police called the dog warden to take custody of the couple’s three dogs.
After investigating, officers arrested Linda Gaines on a charge of domestic violence, along with Klifford Ault. Both were booked into the Scioto County Jail.
Court Action
Ault later appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court, where a protection order was issued. He was released from jail on his own recognizance and is scheduled to return to court on January 8.
