A troubling call on Baher Road is raising an important question many parents ask:
How old does a child have to be before they can legally stay home alone?
Officers were dispatched after a caller reported an 11-year-old boy had allegedly been left home alone with two younger girls while the children’s father and his girlfriend were in Florida.
The caller further claimed the father had been arrested while out of state.
When authorities arrived, they found only one child at the residence.
Child Protective Services responded to the scene, and about an hour later the child’s grandfather arrived.
CPS ultimately released the child into the care of the grandparents.
⚖️ SO WHAT DOES OHIO LAW SAY?
Surprisingly, Ohio does not have a specific legal minimum age for leaving a child home alone.
That means there’s no exact law saying:
- “An 11-year-old can stay home alone”
or - “A 13-year-old can babysit”
Instead, situations are judged case-by-case.
Authorities look at things like:
- The child’s maturity level
- How long they were alone
- Whether younger children were involved
- Access to food, medication, and phones
- Whether an adult was reachable
- Safety risks inside the home
👀 WHAT MOST EXPERTS RECOMMEND
Many child safety organizations suggest:
- Children under 10 generally should not be left alone for long periods
- Preteens may handle short daytime periods if mature
- Overnight or multi-day situations are a completely different matter
And caring for younger siblings increases the responsibility significantly.
🚨 WHEN IT CAN BECOME NEGLECT
Leaving children alone may become a criminal or CPS issue if:
- The child is endangered
- No responsible adult is available
- The absence is excessive
- Children are unable to care for themselves
❤️ WHY PEOPLE CALL
In many cases, neighbors or relatives aren’t trying to “cause trouble.”
They’re worried.
And when children may be alone without support, police and CPS generally prefer to check first and sort things out later rather than risk something tragic happening
