A late-night call at the Quality Inn spiraled into a confusing, resource-draining ordeal after a man repeatedly dialed 911 claiming someone had a gun—then admitted he was drunk and just wanted a ride.
Officers were first dispatched to the Quality Inn around 11 p.m. after a man called 911 saying he had received a text from his girlfriend claiming a male had a gun. Instead of asking officers to check on her, the caller asked deputies to come pick him up, offering to give them directions.
During the call, the man admitted he had been drinking.
Moments later, he called back again, urging officers to “hurry.” Dispatch relayed directions the man provided, saying units were headed toward State Route 35 near the prison in Lucasville, based entirely on the caller’s instructions. Officers advised the man that the woman herself needed to call 911 if she was in danger.
That didn’t stop the calls.
Repeated 911 Calls Tie Up Dispatch
The original caller continued dialing 911 multiple times, repeatedly insisting he needed a ride because he was drunk and couldn’t drive. Dispatch eventually advised him to stop calling unless he had new information, warning he was tying up emergency resources.
Then came the twist.
A few minutes later, the man called again and told dispatch to cancel everything, stating, “You can cancel that—it’s all bullshit. They said he’s got a gun in case I show up.”
Woman Confirms No Threat
Dispatch made contact with the woman via RapidSOS text-to-911 and had her call in directly. She told officers she was fine, not being threatened, and confirmed the man calling was her ex-boyfriend.
Officers returned to the Quality Inn and patrolled the area the man had claimed was dangerous. They found no woman, no gun, and no disturbance.
Later, officers spoke directly with the woman, who again stated she was safe. She refused to give her location, said she wanted her ex to stop contacting her, and confirmed there was no threat involving a firearm.
Officers advised the man to leave the woman alone and not contact her again.
