An intoxicated woman got into a car with strange men and police tell her worried friend, there’s nothing they can do to help. We hit the highlights of the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Daily Briefing.

Rides From Strangers

A woman called police from Frank & Steins Lounge just after midnight to report a scary situation with her friend.

She said her heavily intoxicated friend got into a vehicle with some guys neither one of them knew. The woman was out drinking for her birthday, but took the celebration too far and had to be helped out of the bar by the two unknown men.

She said the men got the key to her drunken friend’s vehicle and put her in the front seat. She told her friend to get out, but the woman would not comply. She did not feel her friend would go willingly with strangers to an unknown destination.

Officers said no crime had been committed at that point, so there was nothing they could do.

Shots Reported at Bar Fight

  • Just before 2 pm, a caller reported shots fired at an altercation at JJs Shenanigans.  There was a group of people fighting in the back of the building.  Police cleared the bar and restrooms and took 4 items for impound. No victims came forward to report injuries.
  • Just after 2 am, a caller claimed a man assaulted him at Frank & Stein’s. Police spoke with the bar manager and several other people who said the people involved in the fight had left the area.

Late Night Police Chase

When police tried to pull over a wrong-way driver at 2:35 am, the driver took off south on Offnere, then west on Gallia, then south onto Waller.

Police stopped the vehicle on 3rd Street and took the man into custody.

Assaulted and Robbed

A Thomas Avenue woman said a man assaulted her and stole money and bank cards before taking off towards Mabert. Police took information for a report.

Attacked with a Hammer

A 10th Street caller contacted police at 5:37 am to report he was attacked with a hammer at a 10th Street apartment.

Police took the woman into custody.

Suspicious Activity

Just before 6:30 pm, a caller reported 2 people sleeping on the porch of a Gay Street church.

The people told officers they had permission from the pastor to sleep there as long as they cleaned up after themselves.

Officers suggested they get something in writing from the Pastor and suggested they leave until that time.

Panhandling Problems

At 8:13 am, an employee at Super Quik reported a man pestering customers for money and refusing to leave the property.

He told officers he was trying to get money for gas. Police advised him he couldn’t pester people for money.
