Police say what began as a family fight on McCall Road turned into a violent domestic assault that left one man calling 911 and another hauled off in cuffs.
According to officers, a man told them his stepfather attacked him during a heated argument. The victim reported he was grabbed by the neck, thrown to the ground, and punched in the face multiple times. The only thing that stopped the beating, police said, was the victim’s mother pulling the stepfather off of him.
🚑 Officers immediately called for an ambulance to check on the victim’s injuries. Meanwhile, the stepfather — identified as Shane Jessee — returned to the home not long after. Deputies wasted no time: Jessee was arrested and booked into the Scioto County Jail on charges of domestic violence and strangulation.
Jessee appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court where the judge appointed him a public defender. Despite the seriousness of the charges, he was released on his own recognizance pending a preliminary hearing later this week.
⚠️ Domestic Violence: What You Can Do Before It Spirals Out of Control
This McCall Road incident is just the latest reminder that domestic disputes can escalate in seconds. Arguments that start with words can quickly turn physical — and the results can be life-altering.
💡 Tips for Handling Domestic Issues Safely
- De-escalate first: Take a breather, step outside, or call a neutral friend or relative before anger boils over.
- Don’t go it alone: If someone in your household has a history of violence, don’t confront them solo. Have a backup plan.
- Call early, not late: If things feel dangerous, call police before blows are thrown. Officers would rather prevent violence than pick up the pieces after.
- Seek long-term solutions: Protection orders, counseling, and support services can help stop the cycle before it repeats.
- For loved ones: Watch for red flags like bruises, withdrawal, or someone making excuses for a partner’s behavior. Checking in could save a life.
