A Scioto County Common Pleas Court Jury returned a “not” guilty verdict in the aggravated murder trial of John Moore, who was charged in the fatal shooting of his former girlfriend’s father. Jurors also had the option to find him guilty of several lesser charges, including murder and felonious assault. A charge of having weapons while under a disability was dismissed.
Moore’s defense argued the shooting was an act of self-defense. The incident happened last year when a woman called 9-1-1 to request assistance in retrieving her belongings from her ex’s home on Lick Run Lyra Road. She told 9-1-1 she’d changed the locks. Dispatch told her to call back to get set up with an escort, but she never did.
Shortly after, she called 9-1-1 to say that Moore had shot her father. She admitted her father, who had a CCW permit, had a holstered weapon with him but said he never drew it before Moore shot him in the yard.
Moore also called 9-1-1 and admitted he shot Morris, but he claimed it was because the man had threatened him earlier. Officers responded to the scene to detain Moore, and medics transported Morris to SOMC. He was flown to a Columbus hospital by air ambulance, where he died from his injuries.

BUT THEN
Barely a week after a Scioto County jury found South Webster resident John Moore not guilty of murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend’s father, he’s facing charges of vehicular homicide in Pike County.
The court filed the charges on February 2 and issued a warrant for his arrest on February 5.
Sources tell us the charges stem from a Sunday head-on crash on St. Rt. 220 that left the driver of the other vehicle dead.
