It was just before 2 a.m. when someone called the cops to report a not-so-mysterious smell wafting through Tracy Park—yep, it was the unmistakable scent of marijuana. The caller said someone was openly lighting up in the park like it was their own backyard.
Portsmouth Police rolled in, took a stroll around the grounds, and chatted with a few late-night lingerers. They didn’t catch anyone in the act, but officers admitted someone could have been puffing earlier.
Here’s the deal: While recreational marijuana is legal for adults 21 and over in Ohio, that doesn’t mean you can light up wherever you want.
“Legal” doesn’t mean “lawless.”
Under Ohio law, you’re allowed to possess up to 2.5 ounces of flower or 15 grams of concentrate if you’re of age. But smoking in public? Still a big no-no. The state’s public smoking ban applies to cannabis just like tobacco. That means no lighting up in parks, sidewalks, or anywhere else open to the general public.
And let’s be honest—not everyone’s a fan of that skunky aroma. While some folks are cheering Ohio’s weed laws, others can’t stand the smell in public places, especially around kids or where people are just trying to enjoy a quiet walk.
Your safest bet? Keep it private. If you’re going to indulge, do it on private property and only with the owner’s permission. Getting high in the park may sound chill, but it can still get you into hot water.
Bottom line: Know the rules. Respect your neighbors. And if you’re gonna blaze—do it where your business stays your business.
