Portsmouth, Ohio Police had a busy Friday responding to reports of everything from a possible child abduction to puppies in danger. Officers also answered a report of a parent passed out in a van with kids inside and a woman beating a man with a stick. We break down the highlights of their busy day.

Suspicious Behavior

  • Police answered a call about a suspicious person in the lot of Bob & Floyd’s Tire Sales on Chillicothe Street just after midnight. Police discovered a fellow they deal with frequently in the area. Officers advised him to leave the property, stay out of the road, and not to bother anyone.
  • A caller reported a man passed out in a car with the door open on Mound Street at 5:30 pm. The man was fine when the police arrived.

Keep It Down

  • A caller reported loud music on Kent Street at 12:33 am. Police said when they arrived, they found an open door with a TV on but it wasn’t any louder than normal TV listening. The residents said they’d close the door.
  • Officers answered another loud music call at Iron Body Fitness on Kendall Avenue just after 2 am. They didn’t see anyone inside and said the music wasn’t particularly loud.
  • Police received a call about a loud party on Court Street at 11 pm. Offices saw no sign of a part and didn’t hear any noise.

Under The Influence

Just before 2 am, officers responded to the Party Time Bar on 4th Street. Shawnee State University Police were there advising some college kids not to drink in the parking lot.

Mysterious Footprints

A caller reported people going in and out of a vacant house on 5th Street at 3:17 am.

Police discovered wet footprints left behind by the suspects. Officers said the house should be boarded up.

This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

A woman contacted police at 5:24 am to report someone broke out the rear window of her vehicle on Kentland Avenue. She said it didn’t appear that anyone had been inside the car.

Let Me In

Just before 7 am officers were called to 27th Street by a man who claimed he’d been locked out of his home. He said he returned to find the locks changed and the residents wouldn’t let him in to retrieve his things.

Police tried to make contact with the people inside, but they covered the window and refused to answer. Officers advised him it was a civil matter.

Hey, That’s My Stuff

  • The BP on Gallia reported a shoplifter dressed in a burgundy hoodie. They said he left on foot just before 8:30 am.
  • A woman called police at 11 am to report her neighbor stole and crashed her vehicle. She was unaware the man took the vehicle until his sister called and informed her.
  • Officers received a report of a break-in at a house on Charles Street at 3:57 pm. Police took information for a report.
  • At 9:12 pm, a 4th Street caller reported a known subject breaking into his truck. He said he caught the man red-handed. He did not want to file charges.

Child Abduction?

Police received a report of a possible child abduction on 8th Street just after 12:30 pm.  Six units immediately responded to the scene.

Fortunately, the incident turned out to be a domestic incident between two men and not a child abduction. Upon further investigation, police said there was a ‘severe breakdown in communication.’ The caller said she saw two men fighting.  The two men disputed that they were fighting.

The men were released, and police advised the caller that it was important to be specific when relating details to the police.

Can’t We All Just Get Along?

  • Officers responded to a domestic call at 1:33 pm on Robinson. A caller said they heard a woman saying a man beat her up.  The parties involved told police nothing physical happened and that they would spend some time apart to cool down.
  • Twenty minutes later, police went to another domestic call on Kent Street. A neighbor reported an active domestic and said they heard a woman being dragged across the floor and calling for help. When officers arrived they found the woman alone at the home.

Beat With A Stick

Police responded to a report of a woman beating a man with a stick on 25th Street at 6 pm.  When officers arrived neither party wanted to file charges.

Going Nuts

Police were called to 17th Street and Thomas Avenue at 4:10 pm for a report of a kid in an orange shirt throwing walnuts at cars.

Officers advised children at the scene to behave.

Cry For Help

A man told workers at a crisis center that he wanted to kill himself just before 7 pm. Police and medics responded to his home.

An ambulance transported him to the hospital for treatment.

Sex For Rent

A caller notified police that a man had asked for sex as payment for staying in an apartment just after 7 pm.  Police took information for a report.

 Just a Quick Nap

Police responded to a report of an adult passed out in a minivan in the Kroger parking lot. The caller reported children in the vehicle.

The driver said they’d fallen asleep. They had three children, all of which are teething. The kids nodded off in the car, so the parent decided it was a good time to take a nap as well.

Officers received consent to search the vehicle but found nothing. They advised the parent about staying awake in public.
