Southern Ohio Braces for Snow Hazard

As winter weather sets in, the Ohio State Highway Patrol has issued reminders to motorists about driving safely on snow- and ice-covered roads. The advisory comes as weather forecasts predict significant snowfall for Southern Ohio, with Scioto County expecting up to 4 to 6 inches of snow over the weekend, creating hazardous travel conditions.

Preparing for Winter Weather

Ohio’s unpredictable weather can catch drivers off guard, as evidenced by the 8,104 crashes on snowy or icy roads reported last winter. These crashes, which resulted in 15 fatalities, are largely preventable, with 21% attributed to unsafe speeds and 13% caused by following too closely.

Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the importance of safe winter driving:
“Snowy, icy weather is a fact of life in Ohio. If you have to travel when the weather is bad, it’s important to give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going so you can take it slow.”

Colonel Charles A. Jones of the Ohio State Highway Patrol added:
“Safety is especially important during inclement weather. Slowing down, leaving extra space between vehicles, and staying patient can significantly reduce the likelihood of crashes.”

Travel Safety Tips

Motorists are encouraged to follow these tips to stay safe:

  • Use headlights whenever windshield wipers are in use, as required by Ohio law.
  • Clear the tailpipe if stuck in snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Remain in the vehicle after a breakdown or crash, turn on hazard lights, and call #677 or 911.

Drivers should also prepare a winter car kit with essentials such as an ice scraper, blankets, flashlight, jumper cables, cell phone charger, first aid supplies, water, and non-perishable food. Vehicle maintenance, including tire tread checks, battery testing, and keeping washer fluid reservoirs full, is vital for winter readiness.

Scioto County and Southern Ohio Weather Forecast

Southern Ohio residents, particularly in Scioto County, should brace for heavy snowfall and freezing conditions over the next few days.

Stay Safe and Vigilant

As Southern Ohio prepares for its first significant snowfall of the season, it is crucial for residents to take extra precautions when traveling. Together, by staying informed and prepared, we can minimize accidents and ensure everyone arrives safely at their destination.

Let’s take this opportunity to drive responsibly and look out for one another during the challenging winter months ahead.
