A toddler was taken to the hospital and a mom directly to jail after the tot opened fire at the Walmart this morning.
More than prices were falling, Ceiling tile and debris were also falling after a 2-year-old got his hands on a gun and opened fire.
Let’s take a look at what happened. Just after 11 am, a 9-1-1 call came in reporting a gunshot inside the store.
Waverly Officers and EMS headed to the scene immediately. When they got there, they found the mother of a two-year-old boy waiting for them. She told officers her toddler had accidentally fired her Taurus 9 mm firearm.
According to the woman, the child took the weapon from her purse and fired a shot into the ceiling. The little boy had a minor injury to his forehead from the recoil of the gun.
Officers arrested the mother and handed the little boy over to a guardian who took him to the nearby urgent care for treatment. Police arrested the mom for endangering children. The Pike County Prosecutor will present the case to the Grand Jury at a later date. Officers haven’t released the mother’s name yet.
Although you’d think it goes without saying, the Waverly Police Department reminded citizens not to leave firearms where children can access them.
