A family’s return home from the hospital turned into a frightening encounter with an aggressive dog, while in a separate incident another property owner reported dogs killed livestock during a brutal attack.
The two complaints highlight an ongoing problem law enforcement and animal control agencies regularly face — dogs running loose and causing damage, injuries, and sometimes death.
In the first case, Lawrence County deputies responded after a family reported an aggressive dog had entered their property and allegedly attempted to attack their child.
According to the report, the family had just returned home when their young son walked toward the front door with a house key.
Moments later, the child reportedly came running back in tears after encountering a pit bull near the residence.
The family told deputies the dog jumped toward the child and attempted to bite him.
They also reported the same dog had killed seven pet rabbits that were being kept in cages on the porch.
According to the report, the dog’s aggressive behavior did not stop there.
The family alleged the animal also attempted to attack the child’s father.
Fearing for his family’s safety, the father reportedly retrieved a firearm and shot the dog.
Deputies later attempted to determine who owned the animal. A nearby resident denied ownership but told investigators that relatives sometimes kept dogs on the property. The investigation remains ongoing.
Calf Killed During Attack
In a separate animal complaint, a livestock owner reported that two dogs attacked a cow while it was giving birth.
According to the report, the owner told deputies a black-and-white dog and a second unidentified dog attacked both the cow and newborn calf.
The calf did not survive.
The owner showed deputies the calf, which had suffered severe injuries during the attack.
Investigators were unable to immediately identify the dogs responsible.
The property owner told deputies he did not recognize the animals and did not believe they belonged to nearby neighbors whose dogs he knew.
The case remains under investigation while efforts continue to identify the dogs and their owner.
When Pets Become a Public Safety Issue
Most dog owners view their animals as beloved family members.
But under Ohio law, dogs that repeatedly run loose or attack people, pets, or livestock can create serious legal and financial consequences for their owners.
Animal attacks can lead to:
- veterinary bills
- livestock losses
- civil lawsuits
- dangerous dog designations
- criminal citations
- and, in some cases, the destruction of the animal itself
Livestock attacks are especially costly for farmers because losses often extend beyond the immediate animal killed. A cow injured or stressed during calving can face additional health complications, creating thousands of dollars in potential losses.
In the first case, deputies are still working to determine ownership of the dog involved.
In the second, investigators are still trying to identify the dogs responsible for killing the calf.
But both incidents serve as a reminder that when dogs escape confinement, the consequences can quickly become tragic for both people and animals.
