Waverly, Ohio Police Chief John Winfield issued a warning to drivers in the tiny town of 4,000 – follow the rules or else.
In a public letter to citizens, Winfield said he was requesting assistance from the community to fight an explosion of crashes on Emmit Avenue. “The Waverly Police Department has handled 64 traffic crashes last year on Emmitt Avenue alone. The majority of those crashes were non-injury. So far this year, we have handled 12 crashes on Emmitt Avenue, with one being an injury accident on February 21.”
Winfield says it’s easy to explain what’s behind the problem – people ignoring basic traffic safety rules like stopping for red lights and obeying the speed limit. As a result, Waverly officers are ready to crackdown. “My officers and I will be aggressively patrolling Emmitt Avenue. I have directed officers to focus on Red Light Violations, Speeding Violations, and aggressive driving on Emmitt Avenue.”
Not a Ticket Writing Contest
The chief said he wanted citizens to know what was happening. He said this isn’t some attempt to see how many tickets the department can write but an attempt to reduce the number of accidents.
Winfield finished with a plea, “I am asking for the community to help by obeying the posted speed limit of 35 mph. I encourage the community not to attempt to beat the light, especially while making a left turn. Please, slow down and be patient.”
