James Randall Workman, of Thornton, CO, a former Portsmouth resident, passed away on September 15, 2023, in Aurora, CO, at the age of 64.
Jim was born on June 27, 1959, in Portsmouth to Janice F. Workman and the late James A. Workman, the oldest of six siblings. Throughout his life, Jim loved playing baseball, beginning with run-down neighborhood baseball with his brothers and friends, and later for the Del Rice League and the Portsmouth Police Department.
After graduating from Portsmouth High School in 1977, Jim fulfilled two childhood dreams: the first, becoming a fireman in the United States Air Force and later for the Portsmouth Fire Department, and the second, following in his father’s footsteps in joining the Portsmouth Police Department. Jim retired from PPD as a Sergeant after being injured in the line of duty.
Jim enjoyed life and loved his children, Abby, Sara, and Matt, every day of their lives. He enjoyed traveling, with some favorite trips being Greece, Germany with the Air Force, a Caribbean Dream Cruise, St. Maarten, and Maui, from where he adopted the moniker, “Maui Jim”.
On weekend evenings prior to the pandemic, you could hear Jim belting out his favorite songs at various Colorado karaoke bars. At Park City Lounge, a favorite, you might hear him sing a Bob Segar tune, Matchbox Twenty, or some from his favorite genre, the 1970s. He also loved playing those same songs at home on his guitar.
Jim is survived by his mother, Janice F. Workman of Portsmouth; his children, daughter Abigail (Nick) Saltsman and their four children, Lily, Charlie, Annie, and Joey, all of Dublin, daughter Sara (Kenny) Baker and their two children, Carlee and Jacqui, all of West Jefferson, and son Matt Workman; three sisters, Amy (Rick Yates) Slack of South Webster, Deborah (Steve) Gorin of Golden, CO, and Melody (Al) Addasi of Pikeville, KY; three stepsiblings, Chris (Doreen) Miller of Springboro, Lori (Jerry) Guinn of Stout, and Joe Miller of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews who loved Jim, Rachel (Andy) Yates, Jessica (Andy) Bouts, Tanner (Destananneay) McGlone, Ashley (Tim) Brown, Amarita Thompson, Emma (Dominic) Amos, Brenna (Andres) Bullon Delfin, Noah Riley, and Alison (Daniel) Boswell.
