The Dark Side of Online Games: How A Woman Used Roblox to Lure a 10-year-old into Murder
In a disturbing case that underscores the dangers of unsupervised online activity, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office recently arrested 36-year-old Tara Alexis Sykes for attempted murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse. The shocking incident involved a 10-year-old child who, under Sykes’ influence via the popular online gaming platform Roblox, attempted to fatally harm a 2-month-old infant.
According to investigators, Sykes communicated with the child through Roblox and gave explicit instructions on how to kill the infant, including suggestions to drown the baby, burn the baby with scalding water, and drop the baby on the floor. Unfortunately, the child followed through with one of the instructions, dropping the infant on a kitchen floor, which resulted in serious injuries. What’s more, Sykes even provided step-by-step guidance on how to kill the adults in the home, instructing the child to cut their throats while they slept and burn the house down by setting fire to aerosol-doused bed sheets. While the child set up the fire hazard, they fortunately did not follow through with further violence.
As Escambia County Sheriff Chip W. Simmons remarked, “I have been in Law Enforcement for over 40 years and have never seen anything quite like this.”
This heartbreaking case is a sobering reminder of the dangers kids can face when they are left unsupervised in online spaces, particularly in social gaming environments like Roblox, where predators can disguise themselves and target children.
