Miyoko Howard, a beloved friend, and community member, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, at the age of 90.
Born in Japan on January 2, 1935, Miyoko brought joy, wisdom, and a vibrant spirit into the lives of all who knew her. She married the love of her life, Hoy Howard, in Japan, and the two began a new chapter together when they moved to Waverly, Ohio in the 1960s. Together, they ran a successful bar that became a cornerstone of the community—a place filled with laughter, connection, and hospitality.
After Hoy’s passing, Miyoko continued to demonstrate her resilience and work ethic by managing a friend’s liquor store for three years. Never one to shy away from a new challenge, she later pursued a career as a nurse’s aide, dedicating herself to the care and wellbeing of others until her retirement.
Miyoko was known for her independence and adventurous spirit. She loved driving, especially long trips out of town, and took joy in the freedom it brought her. With a strong sense of justice and a snappy, spirited personality, she never hesitated to speak her mind—and always with purpose. She had a deep respect for the younger generation, believing in their potential to shape a brighter future.
A dedicated practitioner of SGI Nichiren Buddhism, Miyoko was an active member of Soka Gakkai International. She lived by the principles of dignity, equality, and peace, constantly seeking to grow and encourage others. Through heartfelt letters, lively conversations, and tireless support, she shared her belief in the power of human revolution and the importance of inner transformation. She often prayed for the happiness of those around her and worked to build bonds of friendship through sincere dialogue.
Miyoko’s life was one of compassion, courage, and continuous effort to better herself and her community. She will be remembered not only for her vibrant presence and strong will, but also for the love and encouragement she gave so freely.
She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, generosity, and unwavering faith. Her memory will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege to know her.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her remarkable life on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 1:00pm at the Botkin Hornback Funeral Home, 314 E. North Street, Waverly, Ohio 45690.
