A trip to Southern Ohio Medical Center turned into a wild phone hunt after a woman reported her stolen cell was “pinging” nearby.
Portsmouth Police rolled up to SOMC’s main campus to help track the missing device, but when they asked security to check the cameras, they hit a wall—no footage without a subpoena.
That didn’t stop the investigation. Officers followed the electronic trail to a home on Summit Street, where they detained Carolyn Bunner. Sure enough, the missing phone was found and returned to its rightful owner back at SOMC.
Bunner was booked into the Scioto County Jail on theft charges. She appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court, where she was released on her own recognizance. She’s set to be back in court on October 28.
Police say it’s another reminder that stolen phones are harder to hide than crooks think—thanks to technology that leads straight to their door.
