Bernard Rogers, 76, of Portsmouth

April 3, 1944 - January 19, 2021

Bernard Joseph Rogers, 76, of Portsmouth, took the hand of his Lord and Savior and peacefully left this world to his heavenly home on January 19, 2021, while at home surrounded by his family.  Born on April 3, 1944 to the late Joseph Addison Rogers and Nettie Florina (Wilson) Rogers and grew up in Sciotodale and graduated from Wheelersburg High School in 1962.

At the age of 18, Bernie, as he was known to everyone, went to work at Harbison Walker Brick Refractory, where he remained a faithful employee for 20 years.  He then became a Journeyman Electrician, leaving his mark all over Scioto County with his electrical work in Wayne Hills, Ponderosa, the Wheelersburg Cinema and many other businesses and homes.  Bernie left the trade and began working for NAPA Auto Parts, but continued his electrical work on the side.  After many years with NAPA, he left for employment with Glockner Oil in Piketon until his retirement in 2010.

Bernie enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and arrowhead hunting and was a huge fan of covered bridges and their structural beauty.  He drove many miles, just to see and photograph each covered bridge in the State of Ohio.

He was a member of Riverview Wesleyan Church and enjoyed playing the piano and singing praises to God.  Bernie’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with his children and grandchildren, which he always referred to as “gifts from God”.

Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Katherine Euton and Dorothea Dorsett.

Surviving are a brother, Charles Robert Rogers, two sisters, Thelma (Ray) Montgomery and Charlotte (James) Hulett, his former wife, Linda (Hammonds) Rogers, a daughter, Kellie Rogers (fiancé Brian Brown), two sons, David (Vonda) Rogers and Michael (Jennifer) Rogers, nine grandchildren, Kory (Cortnie) Rogers, Hannah (Scott) Brunner, Kody Rogers, Cheyenne Rogers, Hayden Rogers, Savannah Rogers, Ella Rogers, Kyleigh Rogers and Josie Rogers, seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.

One of the greatest things you could say about Bernie is that he was a man with a heart of gold.  He never met a stranger and he would go out of his way to help anyone with anything.  If you knew him, you immediately loved him and he was truly loved by many.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 23rd, at Riverview Wesleyan Church on the corner of 2nd and Madison Streets, Portsmouth, Ohio with Pastor Mike Queen officiating.  Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive guests at the BRANT FUNERAL HOME IN SCIOTOVILLE from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday and at the church one hour before the service.

Masks will be required for admission, but not furnished by the funeral home.  Social distancing will be observed.
