What started as a group of children selling lemonade in their front yard ended with a neighbor in handcuffs and headed to jail.
Deputies were called after multiple residents reported that an intoxicated man was yelling, cursing, and making obscene gestures toward children gathered at a lemonade stand.
According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the incident involved several juveniles, including the daughters of neighboring families who were spending time together and selling lemonade outside a residence.
When deputies arrived, they spoke with residents who reported that the man, who lived across the street, had been standing outside his own home yelling at the children.
Witnesses told deputies the man was shouting profanities and repeatedly making offensive gestures toward the group.
Parents who were present described the behavior as part of an ongoing problem involving the neighbor.
While speaking with the families, deputies learned the man had also reportedly been preparing to get into his vehicle and drive away.
Deputies Find Man Intoxicated
Officers then crossed the street to speak with the accused neighbor.
According to the report, the man denied saying anything to the children.
However, he admitted he had been drinking.
Deputies noted several signs of intoxication, including:
- Bloodshot eyes
- A strong odor of alcohol
- Difficulty maintaining his balance
- Slurred and impaired behavior
Rather than immediately arresting him, deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation.
The man was instructed to stay inside his home or remain in his backyard and avoid any further contact with the families across the street.
For a short time, it appeared the situation had been resolved.
Second Complaint Comes In
It didn’t last.
A short time later, one of the parents contacted authorities again, reporting that the man was once again causing problems in the neighborhood.
This time, witnesses reported he had left his property and was walking down the street with his dog.
Deputies searched the area but initially could not locate him.
When officers returned to the neighborhood, they spotted the man standing in the roadway speaking with a woman who had stopped her vehicle in front of his residence.
At that point, deputies decided enough was enough.
The man was informed he was under arrest for disorderly conduct.
Things Got Worse After the Handcuffs Came Out
According to the report, the man became increasingly angry once he was taken into custody.
Deputies stated he began cursing at them and taunting them while being escorted to the patrol vehicle.
He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail and lodged on the disorderly conduct charge.
The entire encounter was captured on body-worn camera footage.
When Drinking Turns Into Disorderly Conduct
While simply being intoxicated is not automatically a crime, Ohio law allows disorderly conduct charges when a person’s behavior creates a public disturbance, threatens others, or continues after warnings from law enforcement.
Cases often involve:
- Fighting or threatening behavior
- Excessive yelling in public
- Harassing neighbors
- Creating disturbances that require repeated police responses
In this case, deputies say they initially gave the man an opportunity to stay home and avoid arrest.
Instead, according to witnesses and investigators, the situation escalated from yelling at children selling lemonade to a trip to the county jail.
