It was anything but quiet in Portsmouth overnight as police bounced from call to call in a string of late-night oddities that had officers chasing shadows.
💥 GUNFIRE ON BERTHA AVENUE?
Just after 11:30 p.m., reports of gunshots sent officers racing to the area of Bertha Avenue and Argonne Road. Two women on the Scioto Trail said they heard the pops and suspected a man and woman in a car. Police searched the area, but the culprits — and the car — had vanished.
😴 SUSPICIOUS SNOOZE AT THE AMBULANCE LOT
Around midnight, Portsmouth Police were called to Portsmouth Ambulance on Gallia for a person passed out in the lot. But before officers could check, the mystery napper woke up and took off.
🎳 SLEEPERS BEHIND SUNSET BOWLING LANES
At 1:30 a.m., a citizen flagged down an officer to report people passed out behind Sunset Bowling Lanes on 17th Street. But once again — by the time police got there, the sleepers had disappeared into the night.
🚔 Takeaway: Whether it’s late-night gunfire or people sleeping where they shouldn’t, police say the best thing you can do is call it in right away — and if it’s safe, stay on scene so you can point officers in the right direction.
Because in Portsmouth after dark, you never know if the next call will be a shootout, a sleepover, or both.
