Lawrence County Commissioner Freddie Hayes, Jr. says being a commissioner is not just a paycheck for him, it’s his passion.
Speaking at the Fourth Friday Luncheon for Tri-State Bible College in South Point, he said “I’m blessed to be able to do this job because I want to. I enjoy seeing progress. I can make decisions that not a lot of other people can make cause I don’t need it for a paycheck. It’s a passion of mine.”
At the top of Hayes’ list of achievements is a complete revamp of the county’s animal shelter. “Anyone who knows me knows that I am a dog lover. It was something passionate that we took up and we’ve completely redone it and we have a no-kill shelter which I am very proud of. These animals are just like human beings to me.”
Hayes also touted the county’s $2.4 million budget carryover and the new combined headquarters for the Sheriff’s Department, 9-1-1, EMS, and the Coroner.
