Hope F. Villarreal

Hope F. Villarreal, a woman of extraordinary beauty, elegance, warmth, and grace, passed away surrounded by the love of the family she cherished. Born and raised in a picturesque village nestled in the mountains of Tuscany, Italy, Hope carried the beauty, traditions, and spirit of her Italian heritage with her throughout her remarkable life.

Hope’s journey to America was itself an extraordinary part of her family’s history. In the years following World War II, she and her family left their beloved Italy to begin a new life in the United States. During the war, the Brunicardi family had courageously helped save and protect American servicemen. In recognition of their assistance, the family was brought to America aboard the U.S. Navy ship Vulcania, beginning a new chapter in a story defined by courage, generosity, faith, and family.

In America, Hope pursued a life of service and became a registered nurse. It was here that she met the great love of her life, Dr. Richard R. Villarreal. Their marriage became the foundation of a large and devoted family and a life filled with love, laughter, music, friendship, and memorable celebrations. Hope possessed a presence that was impossible to overlook. Beautiful and impeccably elegant, she was admired throughout Ohio for her distinctive style, grace, and sophistication. Yet those who knew her understood that her beauty extended far beyond her appearance.

She had a remarkable ability to make an occasion feel special and the people around her feel welcome. Hope truly was the belle of the ball. She loved entertaining and was happiest when her home was filled with family, friends, conversation, music, and laughter. Her parties were legendary—not simply because they were beautiful, but because Hope understood the art of bringing people together. Whether hosting an elegant celebration or gathering those she loved around her table, she created memories that lasted long after the evening ended. Her Catholic faith was an important part of her life.

For many years, Hope directed the choir at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, sharing her love of music and giving generously of her time and talents. The choir and the friendships she formed through the church brought her tremendous joy. Above all else, Hope’s greatest legacy is her family.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose unmistakable spirit will live on through the generations that follow her.

Hope was preceded in death by her adoring husband, Dr. Richard R. Villarreal; her brothers and sisters, John Brunicardi, Rusty Brunicardi, Letti Morrow, and Gabriella Brunicardi; and her nephew, John Brunicardi. She is survived by her beautiful sister, Louisa Brunicardi Ussery; her sister-in-law, Sharon Brunicardi; her four children, Dr. Richard J. Villarreal (Kathleen), Anna Villarreal, Elizabeth Villarreal Thomas (Patrick), and Victoria Villarreal Medved (Chris); her two stepdaughters, Jane Hannigan Delauter (Mark) and Emilie Hannigan McCauley (Mac); nine nieces and nephews; her nine beloved grandchildren; and her very dear friend, Nancy Nickell Schaller.

The family extends its heartfelt love and gratitude to the Heartland Hospice team and to the loving, caring staff at Courtyard at Wheelersburg Assisted Living, whose compassion and support brought comfort to Hope and her family. Hope lived a life that was unmistakably her own—elegant but never ordinary, glamorous yet deeply devoted to family and faith, proudly Italian, and filled with an enduring love of music, celebration, and people.

Those fortunate enough to have known Hope will remember her beauty. They will remember her style. They will remember the parties, the music, and the laughter. But most of all, they will remember how she made life more beautiful simply by being part of it. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home in Wheelersburg, Ohio.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday , August 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Wheelersburg, Ohio, followed by interment at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lockbourne, Ohio. In remembering Hope, her family celebrates a remarkable woman whose life began in the mountains of Tuscany, carried her across an ocean to America, and ultimately created a legacy of love, faith, family, beauty, and grace that will endure for generations.
