An attempt to save money ended up with officers holding a man at gunpoint. Just before 5 pm, an officer spotted an issue with his license plate and decided to pull him over.
When they ran his license plate, it came back as belonging to a stolen vehicle. That’s when a Lawrence County Deputy and a member of the Coal Grove Police Department pulled the man over and ordered him out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
He initially refused to throw his keys and exit the vehicle but eventually agreed. When officers handcuffed him in front of his kids and wife, who were also in the car, he explained that he’d gotten the license plate a few days ago from a friend and that perhaps she’d reported her vehicle stolen.
After officers took him to jail, they contacted the friend and learned that when Ohio switched to only requiring one license plate, she’d taken the back plate off her car, which was later stolen. She said her boyfriend then gave the other plate to his friend.
Officers booked the man into the Lawrence County Jail for driving on a suspended license and for having a fake tag.
