Maverick Evan Highland, age 24, passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2026. He was born on January 16, 2001 in Chillicothe, Ohio and was deeply loved by all who knew him.
Maverick was a devoted son, brother, grandson, cousin and friend. He brought joy, laughter and loyalty to his family and formed many lasting friendships throughout his life. He had a special love for his family and cherished time spent together, especially during family vacations.
Maverick was a 2019 graduate of Clinton-Massie High School and a 2019 graduate of the Laurel Oaks Aviation Program.
He is survived by his father, David Highland (Amy Mullins); his mother, Emily Lawson and stepfather, Jason Lawson; and his stepmother Jessie Taylor. He is also survived by his siblings Madison Bailey (Cole), Jacelyn Lawson, William Lawson and stepbrother, Christopher Bowen.
Maverick is lovingly remembered by his maternal grandparents Barb and Mike Johnson, Steve and Barb Lawson and his paternal grandparents Jim Highland and Donna and Rocky Wittkugle. He shared a special bond with his beloved cousins Ryker and Kohen Johnson, Austin Hannah and many other cherished cousins along with numerous aunts, uncles and extended family members who loved him dearly.
Maverick was preceded in death by all of his great-grandparents; his grandfather Mike Mathes; his uncle Adam Johnson; his aunt Judy Hignite and his special grand-aunt Veronica Lynn Burris.
Maverick had many passions. He enjoyed fishing, attending car shows, and was an avid shoe enthusiast. He loved watching Ohio State football and was passionate about lacrosse throughout his childhood. He participated in football, baseball and lacrosse, making many friends through his years in sports. He especially loved his beloved family dog, Massie, who brought him great comfort and companionship.
Maverick’s memory will live on through the love he shared, the friendships he built, and the deep imprint he left on his family’s hearts. He will be forever loved and deeply missed.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at Botkin Hornback Funeral Home in Waverly with Emerson Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Union Cemetery, Denver Road, in Waverly. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
