An inattentive mother picked a pretty bad place to leave kids alone in a car – right in front of the Chesapeake Municipal Court Building.
Two court employees spotted small children unattended in a car and called the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
When a deputy arrived, they spotted the mom pulling out of the parking lot in a red Chevy and pulled her over. The officer also noted children moving around inside the vehicle while it was in motion.
When the officers asked what she was doing, she said she’d been in court but didn’t like how it turned out. The officer asked why the children were not in booster seats or buckled in and why they’d been left alone in the car.
The woman said her boyfriend was watching the children from another car. When the officers asked where he was, she said he had left on an errand. When the deputy asked if he could come back to confirm he was watching the kids, the woman said he needed to get a jump for his vehicle and buy some antifreeze.
Officers discovered the mom had no valid driver’s license and told her she wouldn’t be allowed to drive. A male friend returned shortly afterward, and officers asked if he had been watching the children. The man refused to answer questions but did present a valid license, so officers let him take the car.
Police took information for a report.
