The Scioto County community is mourning the loss of U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Nathaniel E. Curtis, 21, a native of Lucasville, who died while stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Cpl. Curtis passed away following a traffic accident on Thursday.
Curtis had been stationed in Okinawa for the past three years, serving as a digital wideband systems maintainer with Marine Wing Communications Squadron 18, Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing at Camp Foster. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2020 and was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 2023.
During his service, Curtis was recognized with multiple commendations, including the Good Conduct Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal—testament to his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to duty.
A graduate of Northwest High School, Curtis left a lasting impression on classmates, teachers, and all who crossed his path. His decision to join the Marines at a young age reflected a deep sense of purpose and patriotism—values he carried with him throughout his career and life overseas.
Curtis was also a devoted husband and a beloved son, brother, and friend. His brother’s emotional tribute on social media captured the heartbreak felt by those closest to him:
“Please pray for my Mama and my family. We lost my little brother last night in a car accident while he was stationed in Japan. Nathaniel Curtis was a Marine Corps, a son, a brother, a husband to a beautiful woman, and a friend to many. We all will miss him.”
Though far from home in distance, Nathaniel Curtis remained deeply rooted in his Ohio community. Friends remember him as kind, steady, and always willing to lend a hand. His service and sacrifice have left a mark not only on his fellow Marines but also on the people of Scioto County who proudly supported his journey.
Rest in peace, Corporal Curtis. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.
