At approximately 8:44 PM on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, the Ohio State Highway Patrol received a report of an ATV being involved in a single-vehicle crash on Slab Run Road near Hudson Street in West Portsmouth.
As Daniel C. Ward, 30, of West Portsmouth was driving an eastbound Can-Am Maverick along Slab Run Road, he drove off the right side of the roadway, ejecting Trevor Matthews, 17, his teenage passenger.
Mr. Matthews struck the roadway and succumbed to his injuries as a result of the crash at the scene. The crash remains under investigation. At this time alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, Washington Township Fire Department, and Washington Township EMS.
