It started with an empty seat in a classroom — and questions no one could answer.
By the time school officials contacted deputies, a child had not been seen in months, conflicting stories were circulating, and family members feared something might be terribly wrong.
According to a report from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a Lawrence County elementary school after staff became concerned about a student who had not attended classes since December 5, 2025.
The school counselor told deputies the child’s parents had provided multiple explanations about where the child was and why she had not returned to school. The situation became more concerning after a family member reportedly claimed the child had been seen at a homeless shelter in Ironton with her mother.
School officials also said the child had previously been placed in multiple inpatient mental health facilities.
The situation grew even more confusing on February 20, 2026, when the school received medical documentation stating the child should remain out of school until autumn. When the counselor contacted the doctor listed on the paperwork, the doctor reportedly said she had not spoken with the child and had never seen her as a patient.
Shortly afterward, the school received updated documentation stating the child should return to school to continue her education.
Deputies began attempting to locate the child.
Officers first went to the father’s last known address on County Road 119. There, a family member told deputies she had not seen the child since Christmas and said she feared something might have happened because the father had not brought the child by to visit.
Investigators then began tracking multiple possible addresses tied to the family, including locations in South Carolina and Kentucky. Law enforcement agencies in several jurisdictions were contacted and asked to conduct welfare checks.
Later, a woman identified as the child’s mother contacted Lawrence County 911 and stated that the child was no longer at the previously listed address and was currently being homeschooled at a new residence.
The information was documented and the case was closed.
