Gary Lee Bennett, Sr., 84, of Wheelersburg, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 26, 1941, in Sciotoville, Ohio, Gary was the son of the late Gus Rulen Bennett, Sr. and Addie Mae (Scaggs) Bennett. He dedicated 31 years of service to Dayton Walther Corporation, where he worked as a forklift operator before retiring. Gary was also a proud member of United Steelworkers Portsmouth Division Local 5035.
Gary found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved working in his yard, assembling jigsaw puzzles, and spending long evenings on the front porch playing checkers and cards with family and friends—often into the early morning hours. These moments reflected his deep love for togetherness and the lasting memories he created with those closest to him.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 64 years, Faye (Ashley) Bennett, whom he married on June 4, 1961. He is also survived by his sons, Gary (Annette) Bennett of Sciotoville, Jerry Bennett of Wheelersburg, and daughter Rhonda (Bob) Salyers of Wheelersburg. Gary was a proud and cherished grandfather to three grandsons; Ian (Bailey) Salyers of Hudson, Wisconsin, Justin (Jordyn) Salyers of North Lewisburg, Ohio, and Kolton Salyers of Hudson, Wisconsin. He was also blessed with a very special great-granddaughter Elliana Grace Salyers, whom he called Gracie, of Hudson, Wisconsin, who brought him immense joy.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Helen Williams, Nannie Skaggs, and Alma Hale; along with one brother, Gus Bennett, Jr.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to SOMC Hospice for their compassionate care, with a special “Thank You” to Leslie and Susan for their kindness and support during this time.
Gary will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of family, and the warmth he brought to every gathering. His legacy of love and devotion will live on in all who knew him.
