PPD: Spit, Weed & the 5-Second Solution

A Portsmouth Officer managed to solve a B & E in a matter of seconds yesterday. We’ll also check out a report of ‘spit and weed’ in food from a local restaurant. Too Darn Loud

Just after midnight, a High Street neighbor called to say things were just too loud. The caller complained of squealing truck tires. Everything was quiet by the time officers arrived 20 minutes later.

Unwanted Visitors

Police received a call from Classi Cuts & Tanning on Thomas Avenue. The caller said two people were messing around near the back door of the building. They were gone by the time officers arrived 12 minutes later.

Ouch!

Officers assisted an employee at the Valero Gas station on Gallia after she cut her hand. She was taken to SOMC.

An Officer stayed at the store until a manager arrived because the business was unlocked.

Kendall Avenue Confidential

  • At 7 am, police responded to a call of a red-headed woman and a man fighting while walking down the street.
  • Officers found them in room 30 of the Royal Inn.
  • They separated the two then discovered the woman had a warrant in Pike County.
  • Pike County advised that she get up there and go to court ASAP.

That’s My Stuff!

  • A woman called police just before 9 am to report a phone stolen from Kroger on Gay Street. Officers took information for a report.
  • Just before 11 am, Portsmouth Feed & Supply reported that a man in a red pickup stole several items and drove away.
  • Police were called to Robinson Avenue for a theft report. A man said someone was refusing to return a speaker that he left there.

Don’t Be A Litter Bug

Just before 2 pm, police stopped a vehicle on 10th Street after observing a man toss out trash on Washington Street.

The officer told him to pick up his garbage. He did. Officers sent him on his way.

Where’d You Go, Ryan Slusher?

  • Officers were on the lookout for Ryan Slusher. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections issued a warrant for him. Just before noon, he was spotted at the back door of a 5th Street home. When officers arrived, Slusher was gone.
  • At 5:30 pm, they received a report Slusher was sitting at the corner of 5th and Campbell. Slusher wore no shirt and no shoes. Give minutes later someone saw him get into a taxi. He was later observed on a back porch. Twenty minutes later, officers searched a home for him. He was already gone.

Spit and Weed

  • Police responded to a Gallia Street restaurant just before 4 pm.  An employee said the business had received a string of harassing phone calls.
  • The employee said someone called five times in regards to the claims of “spit and weed” in their food.
  • An officer called the person in question and advised calling the health department with any food safety concerns.

Dog Days

Just before 5 pm, police answered a call to 13th Street for a report of a dog bite. An officer took the report but was unable to get in touch with the Animal Control Officer. The officer promised to make AC aware of the issue.

Meanwhile at Kroger

  • At 5:25, officers responded to Kroger for a report of a man bothering employees. Store employees asked him to leave several times but kept returning.
  • He was already on the barred list. Additionally, he signed a letter acknowledging that status. The man was warned of the consequences of criminal trespass.

Get Them Gone

Just after 6:30 pm, a woman called officers to Highland Avenue. She wanted her daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend removed from her home.

Police advised her to file eviction papers. She said there were court orders in place to keep the two from their child. Police asked to see the paperwork. The pair had left by the time police arrived, the advised her to call officers if they returned.

Case Solved In Seconds

  • Police answered a call to 5th Street for a report of a break-in just after 7 pm. The caller reported that a lock was broken on the inside of the house. No one was inside. Nothing was missing.
  • The officer managed to close the case in just a matter of seconds. While searching for a wanted man earlier in the day, police opened a door from the downstairs department and forgot to close it.
  • The officer fessed up to the caller and also said, “I’ve counseled myself.”

Storm Damage

Police responded to several reports of storm damage across town:

  • 7:12 pm – Cable down across road and train tracks
  • 7:24 – Lines down at Gallia Hutchins
  • 7:43 – Tree down on power lines on 3rd Street
  • 8 -pm – 3rd Street pole leaning, lines down, the wire snapped
