What Training Is Required to Get a License at 18 in Ohio

your first Ohio driver's license
ShareTweetEmail

At 18, you still need formal driver training to get your first Ohio driver’s license. This includes requirements like a Class D driver education course, eight hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 50 hours of supervised driving practice.

You also need a Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card, or TIPIC, before you complete the required practice. So, if you’re asking, do you need your temps to get your license at 18? Yes, you do.

The good news is that the process is fairly straightforward once you know what is required.

The Mandatory “Class D” Driver Education Course

There is some sobering context behind these requirements. In 2024, Ohio recorded over 150,000 crashes involving youthful drivers from 15 to 23 years. Nearly 70% were the fault of the youthful driver, and 34% of those at-fault drivers had received no driver education.

Ohio Revised Code §4507.21 establishes driver education requirements for applicants under 21. So the Class D course is not simply a recommendation. It is part of the licensing process.

The Class D course has two main parts. Both must be completed before moving through the licensing process:

  1. 24 hours of classroom instruction: This course covers the learning of driving rules, traffic laws, and safe driving practices. This portion of the course provides the option of completing online or in person through an approved program.
  2. Eight hours of behind-the-wheel training: This is the practical side of the course, which includes instruction with a licensed driving school. It involves learning and demonstrating basic driving skills under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

Supervised Practice Hours (The 50-Hour Requirement)

The eight hours spent behind the wheel with a professional instructor is not considered satisfactory for the entire driving requirement. It is required that you also complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including at least 10 hours at night.

These hours should be treated as real practice, not just numbers to fill in. Drive in different conditions when possible. Practice parking, turning, highway driving, night driving, and handling heavier traffic.

You’ll also need to document the required practice. Keeping your hours recorded as you go is much easier than trying to remember every drive later.

What Happens If You Fail the Driving Test?

Failing the driving test doesn’t mean you have to begin the entire licensing process again. You can retake the test after the required waiting period.

For an applicant under 21, Ohio BMV guidance provides a waiting period before another attempt. If you passed one portion of the test, you generally don’t have to repeat that portion while your TIPIC remains valid.

A failed test can be frustrating, especially after completing all those training hours. But it also tells you exactly where more practice is needed. Use that information rather than rushing back for another attempt.

Steps to get an Ohio license at 18

  1. Get your TIPIC by completing the required knowledge test and vision screening.
  2. Complete the 24-hour Class D driver education course.
  3. Finish the eight hours of behind-the-wheel training.
  4. Complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night.
  5. Document your required practice hours.
  6. Pass the required driving and skills tests.
  7. Complete the remaining BMV licensing requirements.

The scale of the training is worth remembering. You’re completing 82 hours of required education and supervised driving experience before counting the time spent taking your tests or studying for the knowledge exam. That’s a substantial amount of preparation for a first license.

Key Takeaways

  1. 18-year-olds must complete Class D driver education for a first Ohio license.
  2. The course includes 24 hours of classroom instruction.
  3. You must complete eight hours of behind-the-wheel training.
  4. You must complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night.
  5. You need a TIPIC before completing supervised practice.
  6. A failed driving test does not mean you must restart the entire process.
  7. Ohio Revised Code §4507.21 provides the legal basis for key training requirements.
