In March 2010 a Swedish studio called NetEnt released a slot named Gonzo’s Quest in which the reels did not spin. Symbols dropped into place, winning ones exploded, and new ones fell into the gaps, a mechanic the studio called Avalanche. Cascading reels turned up in dozens of games over the decade that followed.
From three reels to a feature set
The slot machine most people picture, three reels and one payline, was built to be understood at a glance. The digital versions kept the reels and added rules. NetEnt’s Mega Fortune, from 2009, bolted a spinning wheel onto the end of certain spins, with the player clicking to stop it and the pointer deciding whether the round ended in a fixed prize or moved up toward a jackpot. Gonzo’s Quest followed a year later with the cascade. Starburst, in 2012, added a wild symbol that expands to cover a whole reel and then holds the reels for a respin.
Newer formats have kept stacking. Hold-and-spin games lock money symbols in place while a small number of respins plays out around them. Pragmatic Play’s Ultra Hold and Spin uses that mechanic on a three-by-three grid with a top prize of 500 times the bet.
What a feature does to the pace
Features mostly change the rhythm. A plain three-reel game resolves in a second and starts again. A cascade can run six or seven times off a single stake. A wheel stops the reels entirely while the player watches an arrow. Most spins in a modern slot resolve without a feature and do not pay much when they do.
That matters for anyone trying to judge a game. The advertised return to player is a long-run design figure, what Britain’s Gambling Commission calls the theoretical RTP, and it describes millions of spins rather than one evening. The same regulator’s plain-language definition of volatility is useful here: a highly volatile game “might be prizes falling into the ‘very large but rare’ category,” a low-volatility one of prizes that are “small and often.” Feature-heavy games tend to sit at the volatile end, because most of the payout is concentrated in the feature.
How the offers changed with the games
The way operators introduce players to all of this changed alongside it. In states where online casinos are licensed, the opening package is commonly a bundle: a match on the first deposit plus a set of spins on a featured title, usually one of the feature-heavy games above, so a new player meets the mechanic on the operator’s money before spending their own.
The bundle comes with terms, and the terms carry the value. Explainers of the welcome bonuses put three restrictions ahead of everything else, wagering requirements, game exclusions and time limits, and the third gets skipped most. A fifty-spin package on a high-volatility title can expire before the feature it was chosen to demonstrate ever triggers.
The view from Ohio
Real-money versions of these games are not available in Ohio. The Casino Control Commission’s remit covers casino gaming, sports gaming, skill-based amusement machines and fantasy contests, and the two bills that would add online casino play, House Bill 298 and Senate Bill 197, were referred to committee in May 2025 and have not moved. An Ohio reader can study the games and the offers, and can play the demo versions, but the real-money product belongs to other states for now.
Across a state line the advertised return is still the design figure and the package terms still sit under the headline number. Locally, the money stories that matter remain the older kind. In late August a Portsmouth woman lost $18,000 to a caller impersonating the FDIC, and the paperwork she was shown looked official.
