Portsmouth Police and Adult Protective Services came to the rescue of an 86-year-old homeless woman living in her truck after being cheated out of her home.  Plus icy streets caused plenty of traffic hassles. We break down the highlights from the Portsmouth Police Chief’s Briefing.

Unwanted Guest

Just before 2 am, a Eunice Street caller reported a man who refused to leave the property. An officer dropped the guy off at the 4 Keys Inn just after 2:30 am.

Suspicious Activity

At 2:48 am, a Gallia Street caller reported a man in a black jacket looking into care. Officers were unable to locate him.

Stuck in the Snow

A caller reported a vehicle blocking the back alley off Pyle Street just before 8 am. She said she was unable to get to her home. Officers contacted the vehicle’s owner who said it was stuck in the snow. Police said the roads in the area were untreated and covered in snow and ice.

At 6:17 pm, officers responded to another report of vehicles in the way of traffic, this time at Castle and Harding. Police said the vehicles were parked legally. However, snow-covered curbs and icy streets made it a tight fit.

Officers Assist 86-year-old Homeless Woman

Officers didn’t give up until they were able to help an 86-year-old woman with no place to go.

It all started just after 9 am when officers responded to a report of a truck stuck in the snow and mud near Anchor Pad Marina.  Police discovered an 86-year-old woman who lived in the truck. She’d been staying there for at least 6 months.

She told officers she didn’t have money for a tow but they found a towing company willing to pull her out.

The woman told officers she’d been cheated out of her home. Police contacted adult protective services. APS initiated the process of bringing Legal Aid into the process. APS convinced the woman to go to a homeless shelter until they are able to find her permanent housing.

Police said the homeless shelter accepted the woman after numerous requests from APS.

Watch Out For Falling Ice

Just after 1 pm, a Gallia Street caller said snow and ice fell off the vehicle in front of her and busted her side window. The driver of the other vehicle did not stop.

Police determined the incident happened outside of city limits and called OSP. OSP said since it wasn’t a crash, the woman should contact her insurance company.

Oops! Wrong Guy

Dollar General employees thought they spotted a guy who shoplifted and assaulted an employee back in January in the store once again.

However, when police checked the video, they determined this guy was much taller and didn’t have any tattoos.

Person in Water?

Just before 5 pm, a caller reported what appeared to be someone in the river floating on a log near the U.S. Gran Bridge. Six units responded but could not locate the person.
