North Carolina Man has 75 Snakes in Mom’s Basement: Arrested on 40 Charges
Multiple misdemeanor charges have been filed against a North Carolina man whose snake escaped and terrorized his neighborhood for days.
A Raleigh man will face 40 charges for keeping a zebra cobra and various other venomous snakes in the basement of his parent’s home.
Almost a half-mile from his home, North Carolina animal control officers caught the cobra. Before the snake was captured, officials warned anyone who saw it to remain away and call 911, as it may spit and bite if cornered.
A misdemeanor charge says the man didn’t inform police about the snake’s escape, as required under state law. He’s also facing 36 misdemeanor counts for keeping snakes in improper enclosures and mislabeling containers containing snakes.
North Carolina authorities haven’t said when the man’s snake escaped.
Anna Felts, his attorney, said her client is stressed. According to her, the man apologized and understands the danger a loose zebra cobra poses to neighbors.
The man’s home was raided last week and 75 snakes, some venomous, were recovered. The snakes aren’t back yet, but she doesn’t know if he’ll try getting them back.
