Man Cited For Loose Dog
A Center Street man found himself in trouble with Portsmouth Animal Control after a report of a loose dog just after 2 pm.
Neighbors told officers that mail carriers had refused to deliver to the whole street because the aggressive dogs ran loose.
Officers knocked on the owner’s door, but no one answered. The officer saw a dog attempting to escape a missing window but managed to keep it inside.
Animal control arrived on the scene and issued a summons to the owner for allowing his dogs to run free.
Pit Bull Attack on River Avenue
A security officer at a River Avenue business called 911 at 10:30 am to report a loose dog attacked him and his dog.
He described the attacking animal as a white pit bull. Dispatch contacted the Portsmouth Animal Control Officer. Animal control patrolled the area in search of the loose dog.
The next day, a Vinton Avenue caller reported loose dogs attacked him and his children. He said the animals’ owners then began to argue with him.
When officers headed to the owner’s house, she said she no longer had the dog because animal control picked it up. She said it was a different dog that menaced the man.
Dog Attacks Delivery Guy, Deputy
A deputy investigating a dog attack in South Point also had a run-in with an angry pit bull. It all started when a grocery delivery person called 911 to report that a pit bull had lunged at him while he placed groceries on the porch of a home. The driver said he’d specifically asked about the dogs, and the homeowner assured him they would be fine.
However, the dog chomped the man’s cell phone and shoe and bit him on the leg. He said the homeowner had sent him $500 for the phone, but he needed to know if the animals were up-to-date on their shots.
When officers went to speak to the homeowners, their pit bull charged the officer. The officer fired a shot, and the dog retreated back inside the house. The deputy explained to the dog’s owner why he was there, and the dog continued to growl at the deputy. He also attempted to bite its owner as he tried to restrain it.
When the deputy explained the man would be cited for the incident, he complained that he’d paid the delivery guy $500 to keep his mouth shut.
Later in the day, the man’s mom called deputies to ask if they had indeed shot at the dog. When officers learned she was not the animal’s owner, they told her she would have to speak with the Sheriff.
