Defendants Stick County With $31,000 Ankle Monitor Bill
Scioto County will shell out $31,813 to foot the bill for ankle monitors for defendants, and that’s only to pay for July and August of this year.
County Commissioners approved the funds at Thursday’s meeting. While defendants are supposed to be held responsible for funding monitoring, none of those under supervision in the county have paid the bill.
Scioto County Commissioner Bryan Davis said the fact is that the court generally determines the defendants to be indigent and unable to pay the cost.
However, Commissioner Scottie Powell said commissioners have been in conversation with local judges to figure ways the county could recoup some of the money they spend on monitoring from the defendants. Powell said they’ve also been looking at how the matter is handled across the region in hopes of coming up with a better way.
