Two months after a suspected toddler overdose sent deputies rushing between Southern Ohio Medical Center and a Lucasville apartment, a Scioto County grand jury has returned indictments against the children’s legal custodian and another woman accused of exposing children to dangerous drugs.
The case began when authorities received a report that a young child may have been exposed to drugs and required emergency medical treatment.
🚨 TODDLER’S MEDICAL EMERGENCY SPARKED INVESTIGATION
As SCDN previously reported, deputies were called to Southern Ohio Medical Center after concerns were raised that a toddler may have suffered a drug-related medical emergency.
Investigators then responded to the apartment where the child lived.
According to reports, a woman at the residence gave deputies permission to enter and search for another woman connected to the investigation.
As the case unfolded, officers interviewed multiple people both at the apartment and at the hospital.
Deputies ultimately took Randi Jordan into custody during the investigation.
⚖️ WOMAN FACES DRUG AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT CHARGES
During its latest session, the Scioto County Grand Jury indicted Randi Jordan, 33, of Lucasville, on the following charges:
- Five Counts of Endangering Children
- Possession of Cocaine
- Tampering with Evidence
- Possession of a Fentanyl-Related Compound
- Aggravated Possession of Drugs
- Possessing Criminal Tools
The indictment alleges children were exposed to an environment where cocaine and fentanyl were present.
👵 GRANDMOTHER AND LEGAL CUSTODIAN ALSO INDICTED
The grand jury also indicted Stephanie Jordan, 58, of Portsmouth, on five counts of Endangering Children.
According to the indictment, Stephanie Jordan was the legal custodian and grandmother of the children involved in the case.
Prosecutors allege she allowed the children to remain in the care of Randi Jordan despite being aware of Randi Jordan’s alleged drug use.
The indictment further alleges that children were exposed to cocaine and fentanyl as a result.
👨⚖️ BOTH WOMEN NOW HEADING TO COMMON PLEAS COURT
Scioto County Common Pleas Court determined that Randi Jordan qualified as indigent and appointed an attorney to represent her.
Court records show she was released on her own recognizance pending future proceedings.
Stephanie Jordan was issued a summons and is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
💊 FENTANYL CASES DRAW SPECIAL ATTENTION
Cases involving children and fentanyl exposure often receive heightened scrutiny from investigators because even extremely small amounts of the drug can cause serious medical emergencies.
While authorities have not publicly released additional details about the child’s medical condition, the grand jury’s action indicates prosecutors believe sufficient evidence exists to move the case forward.
As with all criminal cases, both women are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The case will now proceed through Scioto County Common Pleas Court.
