A Green Township call involving an allegedly intoxicated man, multiple guns, an argument with his wife, threats about what would happen when deputies arrived, and two dogs on the property ended with troopers and deputies staging together before moving in — and a Taser being deployed almost immediately.
The call on Carver Road began shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday.
Dispatchers could hear a woman in the background reporting that the man had access to a firearm. The sheriff’s log also noted multiple guns inside the home and a history of previous troublesome calls at the address.
That history was enough for dispatchers to send multiple units and request assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Then the man himself got on the phone.
“There Will Be Trouble”
As deputies headed toward the area, the man became increasingly upset.
At one point, according to the dispatch log, he warned that if any of the deputies showed up with an attitude, “there will be trouble.”
Dispatchers kept him talking.
He said there was a gun near him, but then identified that particular weapon as a pellet gun. He said the other firearms were inside the house.
For a few minutes, the situation seemed to settle.
The log described him as calm around 7:28 p.m.
Four minutes later, he was agitated again.
Dispatchers kept the line open as his mood continued to swing.
The man eventually said he had not fired any guns. He claimed neighbors had been shooting, his wife became upset, and that sparked the argument.
Dispatchers also learned there were two dogs on the property, another factor officers had to consider before approaching.
Deputies Don’t Rush In
Rather than simply pulling into the driveway one unit at a time, deputies gathered with OSHP troopers at a separate location on Junior Furnace-Powellsville Road.
Meanwhile, the situation on the phone continued to deteriorate.
By around 7:50 p.m., dispatch described the man as very upset and highly aggravated. The log also indicates he was making statements about causing problems once officers arrived.
Deputies and troopers then left the staging location together.
All units arrived at the residence shortly before 8 p.m.
Less than three minutes later:
Taser deployed.
Seconds after that, dispatch reported the man was in custody.
Search for a Gun
The scene continued for more than half an hour after the arrest.
Deputies obtained consent to search a garage for a firearm, according to the log.
The available dispatch notes do not say whether that search turned up the weapon officers were looking for.
Once deputies finished at the property, arrangements were made for an officer to escort the man to Southern Ohio Medical Center.
The log does not list criminal charges from the incident or explain why the hospital transport was necessary.
What it does show is just how carefully officers approached the call.
They had a reportedly intoxicated and increasingly agitated man, multiple firearms in the home, warnings about trouble when police arrived, two dogs on the property, and a history that caused dispatchers to send several officers.
Deputies and state troopers staged, coordinated their response, moved in together and had the man in custody within minutes.
A call that spent nearly an hour building toward a potentially dangerous confrontation was over alm
