A worried daughter contacted officers after an identity thief affected her mother’s Social Security Benefits.
She said at the end of November 2023, her mother’s SSI check was lowered without explanation. She helped her mom file an appeal, but that appeal was denied.
The daughter later learned that someone had filed taxes for self-employment using her mother’s Social Security number. and said they made nearly $10,000.

The daughter said they thought they knew who had done it since that person had access to her mother’s documents and had moved to another part of the state.
Deputies took information for a report.
