Mary Elizabeth Flanagan, 98, of Sciotoville, was born on December 3, 1926, in Portsmouth, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, at Concord in Wheelersburg, leaving behind a legacy characterized by love, dedication, and community service. She was the beloved daughter of the late Charles Flanagan and Laura Juliana Dirker Flanagan, and is now reunited in spirit with her cherished siblings, Frederick and Margaret Flanagan.
Mary devoted 40 years of her professional life to serving as a secretary for the City Solicitor, a position she held with unwavering commitment and diligence. Her impressive career was just one reflection of her generous spirit and strong work ethic, traits that touched everyone who crossed her path.
Outside of her professional life, Mary embraced a rich tapestry of interests. Her passion for genealogy allowed her to connect with her roots and share the importance of family history with those around her. In her community, she was a vibrant presence—a volunteer for the Nearly New Shop in West Portsmouth, a member of the Over 55 Club, and actively involved with the Sr. Citizens Board on Market Square. Mary found joy in participating in the Notre Dame monthly raffle and was a dedicated member of the St. Joseph Monastery Women’s Club. Her contributions to these organizations showcased her commitment to uplifting and supporting her neighbors.
Mary is remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews, including Mary Flanagan Dials, Carl Flanagan, John Flanagan, Raymond Flanagan, Vera Pertuset, Margaret “Peggy” Jones, Patrick Thomas, Michael Thomas, and Kathleen Hadinger, along with numerous great nieces and great nephews. Each of them cherishes the memories made with her—a doting aunt whose kindness and warmth resonated through generations.
A visitation will be held in her honor on January 15, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church located at 2167 Lick Run-Lyra Rd, Wheelersburg, OH 45694, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM, preceded by a rosary service. Fr. Michael Fulton will be the celebrant. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. It is a time for family, friends, and acquaintances to come together and celebrate the remarkable life of a woman who gave so much to others while cherishing every moment.
