Ryan Newman walked out of Halifax Medical Center in Daytona, Florida just two days after a horrifying last-lap crash at the Daytona 500 that left many people concerned for his life.

The fiery crash brought back memories of Dale Earnhardt’s tragic death 19 years ago at the same racetrack. Earnhardt’s death brought about major changes to NASCAR safety and there hasn’t been a fatality in any of the top three series since then. NASCAR said little about the extent of Newman’s injuries, only that they were non-life threatening and that he was in serious condition.

Earlier today, Roush Fenway Racing released a photo of Newman in a hospital gown standing with his two daughters saying, “The veteran driver is fully awake and walking around Halifax Medical Center.” Newman’s bosses said he was in great spirits and joking around with the staff and his family members.

Later in the day, Newman’s wife, Krissie Newman, Tweeted an image of the driver walking out of the hospital holding hands with his two daughters captioned “Best news ever.”

Newman and his wife of 16 years announced their separation on the day before Valentine’s Day, stating that they planned to remain friends and continue to work together on their animal charity Rescue Ranch while raising their daughters. When Newman wrecked on Sunday, his wife tweeted “OMG!” but stayed quiet online until she tweeted pictures of the driver and his daughters in the hospital.
