PPD Officers were busier than bees on Saturday. They answered calls about thousand dollar bills missing from a mattress, dealt with a former PPD chief claiming harassment, and responded to OD after OD after OD.  It included a frightening case where a teen boy discovered his mother unresponsive.

We break down the highlights of that exhausting day. If you’d like the full, unfiltered version, think about becoming a VIP member.  Click here to learn how it works.

Serious Charges

Police were called to 17th Street just before 2 am for a report of someone assaulted by subjects that had fled on foot in the direction of Wayne Avenue.

Police caught up Daniel Amis and took him to the station. Amis is at the Scioto County Jail held on fugitive from justice and burglary charges.

Officers also advised that DNA evidence was dropped off but did not specify exactly what that was in relation to.

Kicked in the Face

At 2 am, officers were called to Gallia Street for a report of a group ready to fight. The group was gone when police arrived 10 minutes later but the victim remained behind.

The man had been kicked in the face. However, he refused to cooperate and refused treatment.

3

Barred But Still There

Police were called to Kendall Avenue at 4:42 am for a report of a man busting out a window at an apartment. This guy’s name had come up several times in police reports.

He’s barred from PMHA property but keeps on coming back. This guy claims he was never at the apartment and was arguing from across the street. Medics noted he was covered in minor cuts. He was treated and released.

Police advised him to stay away.

Two hours later police were back at the same apartment. The resident said three people came to the apartment and threatened her. Officers read three suspects their rights. It doesn’t appear they were arrested.

The apartment was searched and some items were impounded.

4

This Property Is Condemned

  • Just after 8 am, police were called to a Robinson Avenue home that had been previously condemned. They advised two men in the backyard to stay away. One man said he was just trying to clean up the yard.
  • At 11:33 am, police were called to 6th Street for a report of people inside a condemned house. Turned out the owner was on the report but was not intending to go inside.
  • Police were called to 5th Street at 5:42 pm for a report of people inside a condemned house. Things looked secure when officers arrived.
5

OD and Drugs

  • At 10:24 am, officers were called to Center Street for a report of someone overdosing in the alley. The person was treated and released.
  • At 11:22, police were called to 12th Street for a report of an overdose. The subject was not breathing and their vehicle had rolled into another vehicle.

  • At 12:09, pm, police were called to the Super Quik on the Scioto Trail. A high man inside the store was bleeding from a face wound and spitting everywhere. He was shirtless and carrying a knife.  Police told him to leave the store.
  • Just after 1 pm, police were called to the Hudson House for an overdose.  A woman was found unresponsive by her teenage son and some other juveniles. The woman was taken to SOMC. Police made sure all of the juveniles got home safely.
  • At 4 pm, police were called out to Auburn Avenue for an apparently high man rocking back and forth. Fifteen minutes later a second caller reported him lying in the street. He was face down and snoring when police arrived but woke up when an officer yelled at him. He was advised to move along.
  • PPD responded to a report of a man and a woman inside a white Volkswagen on Charles Street doing drugs at 5:20 pm. Police impounded an unknown white powder and had a licensed driver come to fetch the car.
  • At 5:53 pm, officers were called to the Family Dollar on 11th Street for a report of two people overdosing in the parking lot. One patient was taken by ambulance to SOMC.
  • Just after 9 pm, officers responded to Thomas Avenue for a report of a woman overdosing.

Mattress Money Mess

This one is a little complicated, but try to follow along.

  • Officers were called to Beachwood Heights at 10:37 at on a report that two $1,000 bills were missing from under a mattress. The caller also claimed that someone had changed her locks.
  • She said that she’d lived with a man at the address for 5 months and was his girlfriend and caretaker.
  • The woman claimed the man is hospitalized and near death. She said his relatives came into the home and tried to kick her out. According to her, they wouldn’t’ even let her retrieve her belongings.
  • Family members said she’d only lived there a few weeks and was a caretaker, not a girlfriend.
  • She was eventually allowed to retrieve her property. The woman claimed that her belonging had been gone through and $2,000 was missing from her mattress.
  • She also took the food from the refrigerator and freezer.
  • She was, however, forced to return a loaded revolver that belonged to the hospitalized man.
7

Kids in Danger

  • At 10:38 am, police were called to Thomas Avenue to check on two children at the residence. He said they were living in filthy conditions.
  • A passerby reported seeing a man beat a child inside a van on 11th Street just after 10 pm. Police say a teen jumped from the wan when it was stopped. The girl has mental health issues and police think that was the cause of the problem. No charges were filed.
8

Not So Neighborly

  • Former Portsmouth Police Chief Chuck Horner requested a shift supervisor to document an issue he’s having with his neighbors.
  • The neighbors have complained about trees and other debris they say may be on his property. Horner told the officers that a recent property survey revealed that he owned part of the land the neighbors believed belonged to him.
  • They accused him of being a racist, made allegations against his family members, and said they’d called on the news media to investigate him.  They have also sent the health department to the property.
  • Horner had recorded and saved the confrontations. He feels he is being harassed and wanted it all documented.

9

Facebook Fracas

Police were called to Boundary Street at 4 pm for a report of Facebook harassment.

Officers suggested she block the alleged harasser on social media and call the police if he comes to her home.

10

That’s My Mail!

A woman called police to her 5th Street Apartment to report that her downstairs neighbors were stealing her mail just after 4 pm.

Police said if anything of value is missing, she should file a police report.

11

B & E

Just after 9 pm, a Mabert Road property owner told police that he’d been alerted someone was inside his house. He waited for officers to arrive.

They found a woman inside and took her into custody though it doesn’t look as if she was taken to jail.
